Homemade Shampoo And Conditioner On A Budget

Jump to the part you need

With shampoo prices where they are, Lynn mixes her own from things she already keeps around: a castile soap shampoo and a coconut milk conditioner, both aimed at dry hair. She pumps each one out on camera so you can see how they lather and pour, since neither looks like what comes in a store bottle.

What Lynn shows you

  • Shampoo: about a cup of castile soap with a quarter cup of distilled water, plus castor oil, coconut oil, honey and apple cider vinegar, and a few drops of lemongrass essential oil just for the smell.
  • She built it for dry hair like hers, and says plainly: "if your hair is not quite as dry as mine, cut back on the two oils."
  • Conditioner: one can of coconut milk with castor oil, coconut oil, raw honey and apple cider vinegar.
  • Because it is coconut milk, the conditioner has to be kept in the fridge, and she says to label the jar so nobody mistakes it for coconut milk - "hair conditioner, do not drink."
  • She sets expectations on texture: castile soap shampoo is thinner than store-bought but still lathers, and the conditioner does not lather at all - you work a palm-sized amount through, let it sit while you shower, then rinse.
